Drawing Matter and Sir John Soane's Museum
Workshop
1115 July 2014

The first Drawing Matter workshop took place in the Drawing Collection Archive in Somerset, at the Sir John Soane's Museum, and in Poundbury in Dorset. It brought together curators, architects, historians and academics to talk about specific drawings from their different perspectives.

As part of this event Alvaro Siza spoke about his drawings for the Malagueira project in Evora, Portugual. The area was originally a farm, 27 hectares in size, on the periphery of the town. The project was delivered using new models of consultation for housing under a democratic system of government. Siza also spoke about the different purposes of drawings: to generate and develop ideas, to communicate, and for simple pleasure.

Soane Oral Project: A Conversation on Robert Adam's Drawings for the Long Gallery at Syon House Part 2

One of the initiatives to come out of the Drawing Workshop has been the Soane Oral Project, beginning with a dialogue around the Adam drawings for the Long Gallery at Syon House. The conversation was between Stephen Astley, ex-curator of drawings and Frances Sands, catalogue editor (Adam Drawings Project) at Sir John Soane's Museum, art historian Adriano Aymonino and curator Markus Lähteenmäki.
