Herzog & de Meuron, Technical building services digital model, 2017

The second image is a record of the technical building services digital model used to coordinate, three-dimensionally, the interwoven mechanical engineering systems (climate control, air circulation, fire safety, among others). Within this dense network of invisible functions, the main hall, chamber music hall, public plaza and foyers appear as empty voids – open spaces ready to be filled by people. – Herzog & de Meuron, 2017

Notes on the Sketchbook

Louis Hippolyte Lebas, Annotated sketchbook, c. 1804–12, DM 1052.3.21

The sketchbook gives us an insight into a thought process, and the way that develops through interaction with material things. It records how thinking – such as design thinking – shows itself to itself. Moreover, it lets us see how thinking grows out of the serendipitous, the unexpected and the eventful. – Mark Dorrian

There is an uncanny gap between the cold precision of a computer drawing and the confusing uncertainty of the design process. We try to bridge that gap with a collaborative method that includes a lot of discussions and the use of computer-prints, scalpel, glue, pencil and Tipp-Ex. – Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan
