Caruso St John

Caruso St John Arch, Cultural and tourist centre exterior, 2004 IN SET

We have been making model photographs for the last twenty-five years, and these images have always skirted between abstraction and concrete reality. They show a world where the atmosphere of our buildings is explicitly evoked at the same time as creating an uncanny sense of the actual size and material of the models – models that have been made only to produce these images. – Adam Caruso

Charles Barry, Smyrna panorama sheet 2 [right] detail 1, 1818, DM 1639.2a IN SET

This meticulous drawing was used by Barry as the basis for a smaller watercolour sketch. In this drawing may be seen not only Barry’s attention to detail, but his ability to translate it exactly onto the page and yet make an arresting composition of a fabled city which has now been overwhelmed by the twin destructive forces of war and development. – Rachel Blissett

Inclusions presents a pocket sized edition of 24 drawings from the 700 images currently on the Drawing Matter website. Including sketches by Peter Märkli and Marie-José Van Hee, a Yona Friedman wire structure and finely drafted 18th-century designs, this small compilation explores the range of what an architectural drawing can be. – Helen Thomas
